CDC Motorcycle 2A/2 Lesson 2: S Course

In CDC Motorcycle 2A/2 Lesson 2, you will be practicing Figure of 8, Crank course, E-Brake and Bumpy Course. The first course in the lesson will be S Course. The S course (also known as figure of 8 course) has be clear within 11 seconds.

Start off the figure of 8 by checking back right and then blindspot left. Your left signal should also be on. Accelerate hard and try to kick up to gear 2 before you cross the line. One common problem faced is that the gear went to neutral instead of gear two. One of the reason is because the gear is kicked up before the clutch lever is fully depressed due to being in a hurry to kick up to gear two. So, if you are having problem of kicking to neutral, remember to remind yourself to depress the clutch fully before kicking up. Please do note that it is also fine if you kick up to gear two after crossing the line.

After crossing the line, cancel your left signal. I suggest maintain constant throttle while using rear brake to control the speed. By maintaining constant throttle, the ride and turn will be smooth. Please remember to turn on left signal when you have completed 80% of the course as you will be turning left to exit the S course

CDC Motorcycle 2A/2 Lesson 2: Crank Course

This should be the easiest courses among the 6 courses. You should be able to clear the course under 6 second. Start by check back right and then blindspot left. Next, accelerate hard and then kick up to gear 2 before you reach the line. Another point to take note is to look at the direction where you are going. Please do not look at the kerb as you will go toward the kerb if you do that.

Once you are in gear two, you can just ride thru crank course without any throttling. I would recommend turning the handle bar to turn left and right rather than banking left or right. Just before you exit from the crank course, please check your far right side to see if there is any bike or car turning left to enter the figure of 8. If there is any left turning car or bike, you have to stop after the line to give way to them. You also have to check if there is any right turning car exiting the car crank course directly opposite of the bike crank course. Then check back right and blindspot left before you move off after giving way.

If there is a queue for the figure of 8 that extend beyond the yellow box, then you will have to signal right once your front wheel touches the yellow box. Then you have to check your right mirror before checking your right blindspot. After that signal left, check left mirror and then left blindspot before changing to your left lane. For class 2a/2, If you feel that the motorcycle is too fast in gear 2, you can control the speed by clutching in.

CDC Motorcycle 2A/2 Lesson 2: E-Brake

Check back right before you start moving off. The key is to drag your gear one and two longer so that you cover more distance on gear one and two. When you reach 35km/h, the middle light will light up. Switch to third gear and do not increase your speed anymore. You can slightly throttle lesser. Straighten and lock your elbow. Remember to look straight ahead also.

As you cannot look down to look at the starting position of the stopping zone, the lamp post on your left can be used a guideline on the position of the stopping line starts. Once you passed the lamp post on your left, you should be prepared to press your front and rear brake together. When you depress your brake lever, your right hand movement will also automatically off the throttle. So there is no need to off throttle before braking. Press more on the front brake. If you press the rear brake too hard, you will skid. You have to stop before the line. Remember not to downgear when you are stopping. You should come to a complete stop at gear 3. Just before you come to a complete stop, clutch in to prevent the engine from stalling. If the engine stalls, immediately restart the engine. Remember to continue holding onto the front brake while doing so.

With the front brake lever being depressed, check back right and then put your right leg down so that you can change the gear from 3 to 1. Sometime, the gear is struck. Thus, you have to release the clutch slightly and then clutch in again so that the gear can be free. After changing to gear 1, check back left and place your left foot down and your right foot up. Signal right and get ready for bumpy course. Release front brake lever and then you can start to move off.

Bumpy Course

Cancel your right signal and then adapt half standing position. Try to grip the fuel tank tight and slightly bend your knee. The technique to pass this course is to maintain half clutch control and close/open throttle control. Whenever your front wheel hit the bump, you have to throttle more and release clutch slightly so that the motorcycle has enough power to move over the bump. Do not fully release the clutch. After moving over the bump, you have to clutch in and close throttle. You have to repeat this action whenever you move over 1 or 2 bumps. If you feel that the motorcycle is moving too fast, then you can slightly tap the rear brake.

If you are having problem going thru the course, then you might want to try riding slowly while in half standing position. Remember, the right posture will stabilise your motorcycle and the right throttle and clutch control will enable your motorcycle to move over the bumps.

After the bumpy course, please use your side mirror to check that the two lanes on your right is clear from traffic before moving out. Be careful not to cross the double white line. There is an arrow ahead after the give way line just before the bend. Remember to check your right blindspot when you are in the arrow.

Pls do try to complete all your theory lessons and tests as soon as possible to prevent any bottlenecking. Both theory and practical lesson can be cleared at the same time. Some learners progress were impeded as they are unable to book their next practical lesson due to not clearing their theory lessons and tests fast enough. Do visit this post to learn more about other CDC practical lessons.
